Hello everyone!

Now that email is back, I’d like to thank everybody who attended the first Chemistry Club meeting of the year on August 20 and the Lake Party on August 28. We had a great turnout, and had lots of fun! Chemistry Club is a great way for all of you to meet some of your fellow science majors, participate in lots of fun activities, and get more involved on campus. I hope those of you who came had a good time and are excited to see what else Chemistry Club has to offer!

We had several important topics on our agenda for the first meeting:

Club dues are $11 for the semester and $20 for the entire school year. This will go towards providing luncheon materials for meetings and for club-sponsored activities throughout the year.

Club t-shirts will be ordered in January this year. Everyone is encouraged to submit a t-shirt design, and the winning design will be featured on this year’s club shirt.

Club t-shirts from previous years can be purchased for $10 (short-sleeve) or $15 (long-sleeve). Sizes vary; first come first served.

National Chemistry Week is October 18-24 (Mole Day October 23!). We would like to plan something this year, so all suggestions are appreciated.

We would love to hear any ideas you may have concerning fun social activities for this year. Some activities that have been suggested are: Bowling, Royals games, ice skating, Frisbee golf, intramurals…… Everyone is encouraged to come up with other ideas!

If you would like to become a member of the American Chemical Society, you can check out the website at http://ACS.org for more information or you can talk to Dr. Schmidt or one of the officers.

The Chemistry Club Constitution is currently being revised; the new version will be emailed at a later date.

Please feel free to contact any of the officers or Dr. Schmidt regarding questions, comments, or ideas!

David Reed, President

Diana Crain, Vice President

Lilly Varner, Secretary

Nick Hill, Treasurer

Alicia Burris and Scott Bush, Communication Directors

Dr. Schmidt, Advisor

Our Vice President has stepped down. Nicholas Sloop has been appointed as Chemistry Club Vice President. Diana Crain has been appointed as Co-Communications Director.

Our first meeting of the semester will be held Thursday, February 12. Funding forms for the annual KAS conference have been submitted to WSGA. The conference will be held at Washburn University, and will be March 27 and 28. Volunteers will be needed to assist with the conference. The search for guest speakers for Chemistry Club meetings continues. Several schools in the nearby area have been contacted, and a few have responded. Other career oriented speakers have also been contacted. T-shirt plans have been finalized and order forms will be available at the February 12 Chemistry Club meeting. More discussion was held on ideas for a Stoffer Hall Battle. Our club would like to plan a “green activity”. Chemistry Day will be held April 2.

The meeting began with an announcement from treasurer Nick Hill that Chem Club would like all members to pay dues. The amounts for dues are: $6 per semester, or $10 for the whole year.

Chem Club has registered for the Homecoming top hat decorating contest. David Reed is in charge of heading up the homecoming activities. Other activities include the float parade, and “yell like hell”.

Family Day is Saturday, September 27 from 9:30 – 11:15 am. Chem Club will be hosting our own event: home made ice cream. Helpers will be needed at our Club table.

More ideas were discussed concerning Chem Club T-shirts. Teresa is leading this project and will be using e-mail to gather ideas for colors, designs and themes. We will vote on colors next meeting.

Chemistry Day will be held in the Spring. Nick Hill is working with Dr. Shaver to get funding from KAS to help pay for the hospitality room.

The annual AAFS conference, for those interested in forensic science, will be held in Denver this year, and will be in the spring. ChemClub would like a list of all those interested in going so tha funds may be gathered from WSGA.

The annual KAS conference will be held at Washburn University this spring. Many helpers will be needed in order to make this event successful, and we will be coordinating with other clubs to make it happen.

Plans are being made to bring speakers to our meetings to cover a wide range of professional and educational topics. Watch your emails for details as to what speakers will be coming and when.

The publication “In Chemistry” features occasional spotlights of Chemistry Clubs from universities around the country and would like to feature our club. To make this happen, we will be needing many pictures as well as a write-up of activities and events.

We will be holding a bowling fundraiser in the spring. More information will be presented at a later time.

Further discussion of Halloween activities concluded the meeting. Possibilities we are considering include: passing out candy to the children, a haunted house in Stoffer Hall, and a magic show.

Watch your emails for the date, time and location of the next Chem Club meeting!

Last Thursday at the Chemistry Club meeting we were all privileged to sit in on a presentation given by Dr. Kevin Ausman from Oklahoma State University. He enlightened us about his research on “Fullerene Derivatization: From Photophysics to Toxicology.” We are very grateful to him for driving all the way from Oklahoma to talk to our club. Chem Club would also like to thank Dr. Leung for sharing his research with us earlier this month. We have been really lucky to have some great speakers this year. Here is some information about upcoming events before the end of this semester. Our annual Bowling Party is May 1st. That is this Thursday! This is a big fundraiser for our club so we highly encourage everyone to help out with selling tickets. And of course we are expecting all club members to come out and take advantage of a fun event before we get bogged down with finals! More information about the tickets will be announced soon, but please contact Renae if you’re interested in selling. And finally, the officer elections for next year will take place on May 8th. We hope to see you all there for this important meeting. If you’re interested in getting more involved, this is a great way to do so. As always, recruit your friends to come to Chemistry Club too. We are always looking for new members to join in on the fun!

Enjoy the weekend and hopefully we will see you all at the Bowling Event next week!!!
