Washburn University Chemistry Department, Chemistry Club, and the Wakarusa Valley Local Section of the ACS are proud to have hosted the first annual Student Research Symposium. Students from schools across the area came to present oral and poster presentations on their research. Those attending were also provided lunch and students were given the opportunity to ask questions to a career panel. The career panel, composed of individuals currently employed in chemisty-related fields, aimed at giving students an opportunity to ask questions related to education requirements, job-seeking advice, and more. Upon completion of the panel, two students were honored for their presentations with one receiving up to $700 reimbursement for him to present his research at the Spring 2011 National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Anaheim, CA.
This year wasn’t exempt from the annual Chemsitry Club Lake Party at Lake Sherwood. Dr. Angel provided the boating and tubing experience while burgers and hot dogs were cooked up by Dr. Schmidt. All and all, students could relax and enjoy some out-of-the-classroom interactions with fellow students and faculty.
Starting off the school year, WU Chemistry Club spent the afternoon meeting and greeting incoming Freshmen from the biology and chemistry departments. Students had the opportunity to participate in making ice cream using liquid nitrogen. Once made, students also had the opportunity to reap the rewards and enjoy a cup of the frozen treat.
